Frequently Asked Questions
Which maps app opens when someone scans this?
The code encodes a Google Maps URL. On Android it opens the Google Maps app. On iPhone it usually opens Google Maps if installed, or the browser version if not. Either way the user lands on the exact coordinates with directions available.
Is this more accurate than using a street address?
Yes, for anything that doesn't have a clean address. Festival entrances, building side doors, parking fields, hiking trail starts — GPS coordinates pin the exact spot, no ambiguity.
Can I change the location after printing?
No. The coordinates are encoded into the static image. Move the pin, generate a new code.
Does it use my current location?
If you grant browser location permission, the map centres on where you are. That data is used only to position the map — it's handled by your browser, not by us. No location data is stored on our end.
Do I need a Google account or API key?
No. The map on our page uses OpenStreetMap, which is free and open. The QR code itself encodes a plain Google Maps URL — no API key needed, no account required.
Will it work without mobile data?
The QR code can be scanned offline — it's just text. But getting directions from Google Maps requires an internet connection. For remote locations, consider letting people know they should load the directions before they lose signal.
Why doesn't the place name appear in the code?
It's for the preview only. The code encodes the coordinates — adding extra text would make it more complex and harder to scan without adding real value. Google Maps shows the location on a map when the user arrives, which is clearer than a text label.
Best format for printing?
SVG. Scale it to any size without it blurring. Always test scan before a big print run.
